The Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa is establishing a multi-disciplinary set of CrossLabs (http://www.dii.unipi.it/crosslab/) funded by a five year € 9.3M grant from the Italian Ministry for University and Scientific Research (MIUR) in the framework of the ‘Departments of Excellence’ program.
The Department invites expressions of interest from qualified scholars in the field of Computer Engineering in view of the opening of a faculty position as Associate Professor, aimed at the development of the planned activities of the ‘Cloud Computing, Big Data and Cybersecurity’ CrossLab.
Candidate’s profile
The Department is mainly interested in seeking candidates with a significant scientific experience in the research and development of technologies and architectures for systems and applications at the intersection between Cloud Computing, Big Data and Cybersecurity, with specific emphasis on the Industry 4.0 application domain. The Department is open however to consider candidates with research interests in other topics yet in the field of Computer Engineering.
The ideal candidate should have a strong record of accomplishment in research, with publications in leading peer-reviewed journals and conferences, as well as demonstrated capabilities in fund-raising from national and EU sources. A Ph.D. in a relevant field of study is required. Teaching experience at the undergraduate and post‐graduate levels is mandatory, as well as an excellent level of English knowledge (both oral and written).
Job qualification
The successful candidate is expected to play a key role in the setting up and development of the ‘Cloud Computing, Big Data and Cybersecurity’ CrossLab. Regular duties include an annual teaching load of about 120 class hours, split between undergraduate and master courses, and tutoring activities for a total amount of 350 hours. If not held already, the successful candidate is expected to achieve adequate Italian fluency for teaching courses in this language within two years from the start of their appointment. Service for the Department includes mentoring master and PhD students, as well as carrying some administrative duties, commensurate to the rank.

About the Department
The Department of Information Engineering (DII) at the University of Pisa is an International Center of Excellence for Research and Higher Education in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Robotics. It hosts 85 faculty members and about 40 postdoc research associates. Its main research areas include electronics and applied electromagnetics, communications systems, computer science and engineering, robotics and automation, and biomedical engineering.
DII is currently involved in about 20 research projects funded by the European Commission (49 in the last three years), 2 projects funded through ERC Grants, and 22 research projects funded by the regional government of Tuscany. It runs an intense activity in Higher Education for about 4000 (undergraduate and graduate) students and about 100 PhD students. In addition, it organizes a Summer School on Enabling Technologies for the Internet of Things, and two advanced post-graduate courses, namely on Cybersecurity and Under-water Acoustics and Sonar Applications.
DII has promoted 4 spin-off projects and has published 186 patents. It cooperates with private and public institutions to provide innovative solutions to key issues in different ICT sectors, and to bridge the gap between academic and industrial research.
In 2018 DII was selected as “Department of Excellence” by the Italian Ministry for Education and Research (MIUR) with the CrossLab project, aiming at structuring innovative labs for Industry 4.0.
